School Committee vacancy

I received word this week that Jack Gorsuch had resigned his seat on the Westbrook School Committee. Jack is a Republican who represented Ward 3 on the School Committee. While it is technically up to the School Committee to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term, Westbrook has a long-standing tradition where the party of the person who vacated the seat can recommend a replacement. The School Committee (or the City Council, depending on where the vacancy is) can reject the recommendation of the party, but to my knowledge (in the last 20 years or so, anyway) they have not done so.

So, the Westbrook Republican City Committee will be meeting on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at 7:00pm (Westbrook Public Safety Building, 1st Floor Training Room) to select a candidate (or candidates) to recommend to the School Committee. If you are a Republican living in Ward 3 and have an interest in serving on the School Committee through December 2009, plan to attend this meeting. Or if you know someone who fits this description, pass the word on.

The candidate (or candidates) that the City Committee selects will then appear before the School Committee at a public meeting. I believe the School Committee will ask a few questions and then vote on a person to fill the vacancy.

Caucus Results

Thank you to everyone who attended the Westbrook Republican Caucus on Saturday (2/2/08).  We had 84 people who came for all or part of the caucus.  (Thank you especially for your patience with the crowded parking lot!)

We elected 24 delegates to the Maine Republican Convention in May.  We were fortunate to hear from U.S. Senator Susan Collins when she stopped by the caucus … as well as representatives from the Huckabee, Paul, McCain, and Romney campaigns.  And we also heard from the Dean Scontras and Charlie Summers campaigns, who will be on the Republican primary ballot this coming spring for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Here are the results of the non-binding Presidential Preference Survey:

Huckabee …… 4
McCain ……. 15
Paul …… 17
Romney ….. 39
Undecided …….. 3
